Community colleges offer hundreds of classes that are the foundation for STEM, and students can take those classes that are articulated, at the community colleges to satisfy the requirements for any 4 year university. They also have the opportunity to participate in internships or research opportunities if the college has MESA or SACNAS.
You also say: “Some of them divide the freshman STEM classes into more semesters,” what could you list an example? I have never seem anything like that.
